 Marine Life Identification Perth WA

Shore Diving

Creature Feature

Within this section I have attempted to identify marine life that you are likely to see during your dives around the Perth shoreline.

All photographs were taken by myself (unless stated) so, if the marine life you are looking for isn't here, I am sorry but that's because I haven't been fortunate enough to meet and photograph it yet or, mug one of my diving buddies for their photographs.

That said hopefully this section will help direct you in some small way in finding the marine life you are looking for, even it is identifying what family it belongs to. I have included where possible links to Wikipedia which gives a greater description of each family.

I have done my best to identify the marine life as accurately as possible however, some species have different features depending on maturity and gender which can be at times confusing.

Some marine life may have been identified using resources that were not necessarily developed for our local shoreline and may have been given a name that is not locally used.

I have found marine life during my dives that look very similar to marine life that is only recognised in other areas of Australia. This may be for a couple of reasons, firstly they have not been catalogued as local to Western waters or, secondly they are closely related cousins to marine life in other areas of Australia, these are known as sibling species. I have identified these with their sibling name until I am able to identify a local name for them.

If you recognise any of the unidentified marine life listed on these pages please email me your suggestions so that I may add these to the list, also please email me any suggestions for incorrectly identified marine life.
